This course emphasizes the development of skills in critical reading and careful analysis of literature. Readings include prose, poetry, drama, and novels primarily covering a variety of historical periods from the 1500’s to the present. In addition to experiencing the literature, students will interpret and evaluate the work(s) within appropriate social and cultural contexts.
Writing is an integral component for the course and for the AP Exam. Assignments include analytical persuasive essays, journals, and other reflective writings, all emphasizing a close reading of the literature. Students will complete numerous timed writings and free response essays, many of which simulate Advanced Placement Exam essay questions. They will complete a research project using print and internet resources on a literary topic and including appropriate literary criticism in this research. All writing and discussion will demand that students support ideas and opinions with direct and specific references to the literature under consideration.
Students must be willing to devote the energy necessary to complete a more rigorous and demanding English II course. It is required that students take the AP English Literature and Composition Exam in May of 2019.
