This college-level introductory literature course is designed for the student who has a strong academic work ethic, is willing to read and interpret complex material, is willing to be coached into effective thinking and writing, and readily accepts challenging curriculum. Interpretation of literature is founded on careful observation of and written response to text details, including structure, style, diction, imagery, theme, and social and historical context. Students will have frequent opportunities to write and rewrite formal extended essays, informal reflections, and timed in-class responses, as well as complete analysis and interpretation activities. Big ideas for the course include character, setting, structure, narration, figurative language, and literary argumentation. These big ideas spiral across nine units.
