The purposes of the service requirements are to heighten awareness of the plight of the less fortunate and to develop in our students a sense of civic responsibility and Christian charity. St. Pius X students must perform 60 hours of service for graduation. Transfer students must complete 7.5 service hours per semester they are enrolled at St. Pius. It is recommended that a student complete 15 hours a year to stay on track.
Students are required to stay current on hours (7.5/semester) for transcripts to be sent. For graduation requirement purposes, all service hours for the Class of 2025 must be turned in by Tuesday, April 8th, 2025.
The three categories for graduation are: (1) St. Pius X High School (2) Parish/Church (3) Community. **No payment may be rendered or accepted by students for the service.** Additionally, students may not miss instructional time at school, or any part of a school day, in order to complete service hours to meet graduation requirements.
Because we want our students to develop Christian charity for those who are most in need all service hours in the Community category must come from one of our approved agencies and should include service to vulnerable and marginalized populations including the elderly, sick, poor, homeless, and people with disabilities where students are performing corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned. A list of approved agencies is available at SPX Service Opportunities.
All service hours need to be properly documented for credit towards graduation. Students must log all service in our new service hour tracking program, x2VOLwithin 2 weeks of performing the service to count for credit.
As of October 2021, we no longer accept paper forms as documentation for completed service.
If you need assistance with x2VOL, please contact:
St. Pius X Service Hours: This service hour category includes any service hours completed at St. Pius or with any associated SPX sports and activities. For example, helping with an SPX kids cheer camp, baking cookies for SPX St. Joseph table, selling tickets at SPX play, etc. A maximum of 20 hours of service to our school can be used toward the graduation requirement.
Parish Service Hours: This service hour category includes any service hours completed in conjunction with a local parish church or grade school. For example, helping with a fish fry at St. James, mowing the lawn for a church, teaching Vacation Bible School at St. Therese, helping teachers to clean their classroom over the summer, etc. A maximum of 20 hours of service to local parish churches or schools can be used toward the graduation requirement.
Community Service Hours: This service hour category includes service hours completed at an approved community service agency serving vulnerable populations who are most in need including the poor, sick, elderly, homebound, and people with disabilities. These hours are different from SPX School and Parish/Church hours and should give students direct access to working with the poor and marginalized and include performing corporal works of mercy including feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned.
For example, bagging food for those with food insecurity at Harvesters, playing bingo with residents at a nursing home, helping kids with disabilities ride horses at Northland Therapeutic Riding Center.
Students must complete a minimum of 20 Community service hours in order to graduate. They may also count more than 20 Community service hours towards their 60 hour graduation total as there is no limit for this service. Please visit our approved agencies link for a list of all Community Service Agencies students can complete hours at.
If you or your child would like to have an additional service agency added to the approved agencies list, please reach out to Ms. Lindsay Young at [email protected] or Mr. Lee at [email protected] with details of the service and service agency and why you believe their mission aligns with the SPX mission to develop Christian charity within our students.
Any student planning to complete “Community” service hours through an organization that is not listed as an approved agency, must meet in person with a campus minister in advance to get the planned hours pre-approved.
Non-Graduation Service Hours: This service hour category includes service hours completed (1) at unapproved organizations; (2) submitted more than 2 weeks late; or (3) when the student has reached their SPX and/or parish 20-hour limit. These service hours will be logged and good to keep track of for applying for scholarships, but will not count to your 60-hour graduation requirement.
