ST. PIUS X COVID GUIDELINES
St. Pius X High School’s commitment to the health and safety of students, teachers and families continues. As we know, COVID-19 has presented many challenges since March of 2020. We remain dedicated to students and families, committed to the academic and spiritual formation of our Warriors.
While navigating the pandemic, we’ve learned so much. A few weeks ago, we did not think a letter like this would be necessary but due to the evolving circumstances surrounding COVID-19in our area, the current mask mandate for Kansas City, MO, and the Guidance for Schools from the Clay County Public Health Center, it is essential for our community to be flexible and resilient, regardless of the challenges presented by the pandemic.
As much as we all hoped that COVID wouldn’t have an impact on this school year, the current high transmission rates in our community make it an issue. Our goals are to keep all students in school, as close to normal as possible, and having the option to participate in extracurricular activities with minimal quarantining. We plan to follow CDC Guidelines and we anticipate the school year will feel more “normal: this year if we take measures between now and Labor Day. With the updated CDC guidance, if masked, students can be in the classroom with 3 feet of spacing, lunch tables will be able to accommodate more students, and there are updated quarantining guidelines which will hopefully keep more students in school and their extracurricular activities. Guidance from the Clay County Public Health Center, in their COVID-19 and On-sight Learning Guidance for Schools (July 29,2021), states: “If a school has implemented universal masking, and appropriate masks were being worn correctly by both individuals during the time of exposure in a school setting, the individual who came in contact with the person with COVID-19 can continue to attend school AND participate in school related activities, so long as they can wear a mask and maintain social distance.” (pg. 10)
We will continually monitor community and school data regarding transmission, and will modify our mitigation strategies based upon that data.
Based on the CDC Guidelines and KCMO recommendations, all staff, students and visitors will begin the year wearing masks inside the buildings on campus between now and Labor Day. Let’s be honest, none of us are happy about wearing masks. We believe this is the most responsible choice we can make at this time. We acknowledge that some will take issue with this, and we respect that. If transmission rates go down in our area during this time, we can and will make changes to this on a daily basis.
Current CDC guidelines can be found HERE:
Close Contact
Close Contact through Proximity and Duration of Exposure: Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person (laboratory-confirmed or a clinically compatible illness) for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period (for example, three individual 5-minute exposures for a total of 15 minutes). An infected person can spread SARS-CoV-2 starting from 2 days before they have any symptoms (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days before the positive specimen collection date), until they meet criteria for discontinuing home isolation.
MASKS:
We are hopeful that the current COVID recommendations do not last too terribly long. With that said we are offering two options for students, and staff to mask up:
Cumpys masks: The uniform approved masks offered by Cumpys will be available to purchase beginning next Tuesday.
Paper medical masks: White, blue, yellow.
STUDENT MEDICAL CONDITIONS
If your student has a condition that mandates they take medication ongoing or if you have any type of emergency plan in place for a condition (i.e. but not limited to epi pen, diabetes, seizures), please be sure your information/medication is in the office by the first day of school. Student’s medication needs to be in the office, and documentation from your physician must accompany the medication. Please email Mrs. Bohr with questions.
DRESS CODE
A few parents had questions about dress code-info from the handbook below.
DRESS CODE
At St. Pius X High School, the dress code is designed to minimize students' attempts to compete with one another through style of clothes and fashions. Furthermore, the school is convinced that the uniform has a direct impact on the learning environment. With that in mind, parents are expected to reinforce the uniform code as printed below. All students must practice/maintain good personal hygiene.
The school dress code is meant to help avoid extremes in student dress and hairstyle. The school uniform is to be purchased from an authorized uniform company. Since all items of the uniform are available through the uniform company or the Warrior Armoury, the school reserves the right to interpret standards of dress for the individual that deviates from what is prescribed in the code. Parents who shop at other stores for uniform items are to purchase only close "look-alikes" to the official uniform; the school administration will be the final judge in the substitution of items.
For those who are in violation of the dress code, any of the following consequences may be imposed. Demerits may be given for the purpose of warning for minor dress code violations such as untucked shirts, no belts, etc. Discipline referrals may be given for repeat offenders or for other violations. Students may also be sent home or asked to have appropriate dress provided at school before being allowed to return to class.
HAIR & EARRINGS:
Hair
All students must have natural-colored hair, one color only, ombre styles are not acceptable. No shaved hair for girls. Boys and Girls hair must be clean and neat. No unusual or exaggerated hairstyles including, but not limited to, spiked or mushroom styles, pony tails, “faux” hawks, mohawks, lines, designs, or shapes cut into the hair. Boys' hair should be short, tapered box haircuts and crew cuts are acceptable. When combed down, hair must be off the eyebrows; at least a portion of the ears must be visible; hair length in back may not overhang the collar. No hair accessories allowed. No “man buns”, ponytails or dreadlocks. Sideburns should be trimmed to the bottom of the ear. Boys who are unshaven will be asked to shave or will be asked to return home. Repeat offenders will also be asked to shave and will receive a detention. Disposable razors will be provided at a cost of $2.00 each.
Earrings
Boys may not wear earrings at school or school functions. Girls may wear earrings in ears only, with a maximum of three per ear. (No gauge earrings). No other pierced areas should be adorned or visible. (No tongue rings.) Tattoos are not allowed to be visible. .

● Jackets and other coats are not to be worn in the building during the class day unless allowed by the principal because of cold weather. Hats may not be worn inside the school building. Students will be evaluated for dress at the beginning of each day during 1st hour. Students who are out of dress code at that time will be referred to the assistant principal and sent home to change if necessary. Students must either contact a parent and get permission to go home and change or in the case of non-driving students, parents must either bring a clothing change to school or pick the student up to take home to change clothes. Time missed from class due to clothing problems is not considered excused and the student will take a zero on the work missed. Students who violate the dress code repeatedly will be assigned detentions. Continued violations will result in suspension from school and a conference will be held with the assistant principal, the student and the parents.

COUNSELING NEWS
1) Download, read, and sign the "Participation Agreement" and return it to the new counselor once school begins.
2) Download and log tutoring hours, and have them signed by an educator who oversees the tutoring. We will not accept signatures from parents unless you are an educator in the diocese or KC public schools.
3) FORMS are here
SPX's license with Acellus has run out and we will not, most likely, renew it. Students who are taking courses for credit recovery have a short window of time to complete their coursework; it is one year from the initial enrollment date as I understand. So there is some urgency here.
Students taking courses online through Acellus to make sure they meet graduation requirements or are part of the Acellus requirements to participate in Northland CAPS have the same deadline. However, trying to complete Acellus classes during the school year in addition to regular school is not advised.

CLASS OF 2022 - IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION NEWS
Please check your student immunizations against the table below. If you need to obtain a record to check, please contact your doctor so that you have a complete record at home. Please take care of any needed immunizations ASAP and bring updated copies of your student’s record to orientation day or the first day of school. Specifically there were changes a couple of years ago to the Meningitis vaccine schedule that can affect your student senior year.
If you would like to send this summer you are welcome to email a legible, scanned updated copy to cbohr@spxkc.org or fax to 816.452.7099.
State health regulations dictate that students cannot attend school unless they are properly immunized and can provide satisfactory evidence of immunizations or unless they are exempted.
If you currently have a religious exemption please remember the email sent April 6 with new diocesan parameters for your exemption. This process must be complete to begin classes this Fall. Please be sure to read the email soon as the process may take some time for your family to complete.
In order to begin classes you need to have this immunization taken care of and documentation to the school.
For school attendance, children should be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella and hepatitis B. Varicella is required for kindergarten through fifth grade. All children are required to provide documentation of the month, day, and year of vaccine administration. Please note the following:
VACCINATION FOR MENINGOCOCCAL (MCV)
*Grade 8-9: One dose of MCV is required. Must be given after 10 years of age.
*Grade 12: Two doses of MCV are required unless the first dose was administered to a student who was 16 years of age or older, in which case only one dose is required. At least one dose must be given after 16 years of age.

St. Pius X High School requires each student-athlete to have medical forms and consent forms. We are entering into a partnership with Healthy Roster as our online health forms platform. This platform replaces Dragonfly Max. You should have received an email invitation from Healthy Roster in June with your student-athletes specific code. If you have not received an email invitation to join Healthy Roster, please contact Courtney Wohlwend (cwohlwend@spxkc.org) with the following information:
- Athletes First and Last Name
- Athlete Date of Birth
- Athlete Graduation Year
- Parent/Guardian Email Address
The physical examination forms are valid for two years from the date the evaluator signs it, unless otherwise noted. All other MSHSAA forms must be updated and e-signed annually. You can find all of these forms under the documents tab in your Healthy Roster account. If your physical examination is valid for another year, I have transferred those forms from the previous system for you, but you will still need to create a profile and complete the yearly MSHSAA documents. If you believe that you have a valid physical on file and Healthy Roster does not reflect it, please contact Courtney Wohlwend. St. Pius X High School does NOT accept paper copies of these forms. We ask that paperwork be completed no later than August 1st for fall student-athletes.
Concussion Baseline Testing
At St. Pius X High School, we want to do everything we can to provide care to those who might have suffered a head injury while participating in athletics. All student-athletes will be required to take a yearly baseline concussion test through Sway Medical in order to have data of a healthy-functioning brain. Medical experts will use this Baseline as a comparison in a Post-Injury test to see if all the brain function has returned to normal. All baseline testing through Sway Medical will be conducted by St. Pius X High School sports medicine staff. The cost is $10 per student-athlete. All testing will be completed on the student-athletes phone. I ask that they download the Sway Medical app prior to arriving for baseline testing. There is no account set-up necessary. The day of testing, the student-athlete will receive a code to begin their testing.
Below is the schedule for the fall sport testing date. If you are unable to attend your team's testing, please reach out to Courtney Wohlwend to find a time to complete the testing.

SCHOOL CALENDAR ON THE WEBSITE
FYI friends. Apple and Microsoft have a new policy which includes cracking down on sites that employ tracking. Google Calendar is one of those. So, at the current time, you may not be able to directly view any embedded google calendars on our website. We have placed a work around on the front of the website, so if you look at it on your phone, you may see click here to view the calendar. It has been working fine on a desktop computer. We are working with our host company.

SUMMER EVENTS:
Check out our website for upcoming summer events!
SPORTS PHYSICALS
Sports Physicals - We will host a sports physical night this year at the school on Monday, June 28th from 4pm - 7pm. The cost will be $10 per student-athlete. Here is the link for your student-athletes to sign up https://tinyurl.com/SPXPhysicals.
Concussion testing - We are officially changing platforms for concussion testing. We will be using Sway Medical instead of ImPACT. The big change will be that we will do yearly baseline concussion testing. The cost will remain $10 per student-athlete. I will get with each coach to find a date/time that works best to complete the testing prior to a summer camp session or a practice. There will be no mass baseline concussion testing this year.
Electronic Medical Records - We have made the decision to move on from Dragonfly Max and are in the process of finalizing a new electronic medical records database for athletics. As you get your sports physical paperwork filled out, please hold on to it for now and wait for further instruction. If your sports physical is still valid for this upcoming school year, we still have a copy of it and will transfer it over to the new system for you. Please remember that even though your physical examination is valid for another year, you still have yearly MSHSAA physical forms that will need filled out. All paperwork can be found here: https://spxkc.org/sports-medicine.
